Donating Your Vehicle to Goodwill
As easy as 1-2-3!
Thank you for your interest in Goodwill's Vehicle Donation Program.
You can rest assured that this process will be easy and beneficial to both the community
and your pocketbook! Here's a step-by-step procedure for donating your titled
vehicle to Goodwill:
Donating Your Vehicle
Step 1: Bring your transferable title to your local
Goodwill to begin the donation process. The person listed on the title will be the
person responsible for signing and completing all paperwork.
Step 2: Arrange for Goodwill Industries to pick up your
vehicle (if vehicle is not running) or drive the vehicle to your local Goodwill.
Step 3: A receipt will be given upon transfer of title.
Goodwill Industries is not legally authorized to estimate the value of any
donations. The receipt must state the date and location of the donation and must
give a general description of the property.
Substantiation Requirements
Property worth $500 or less:
If your donation is worth $500 or less, you only need to substantiate your
deduction with a receipt from the Goodwill that accepted the donation. The receipt
must contain three items: (1) the name of the donee (Goodwill); (2) the date and
location where Goodwill received the contribution; and (3) a reasonably good description
of the property received. Additional information above the basic information
required, including the value of the donation and the basis for determining it, must be
reflected and maintained by the donor's records.
Property worth more than $500 but less than $5000:
The donor's obligation to the IRS is enlarged for donations valued at $500
but less than $5000. You must maintain a receipt of the donation, and you must
maintain and submit to the IRS written records of: (1) the manner in which the property
was acquired, and (2) if the property has been held for less than 12 months, your cost or
other basis. You will also need to complete Section A of IRS
Form 8283. A copy of this completed form must be attached to your income
tax return, and the original should be kept on file with the receipts from Goodwill.

Property"
Property worth over $5000 requires a formal appraisal by a "qualified
appraiser." The appraisal summary form. You and the appraiser must
complete the required part of the form, except Part IV (entitled "Donee
Acknowledgement"), which is to be completed by Goodwill. After completion by
all parties, a copy of the appraisal summary is returned to you. Your copy of Form
8283 serves as the receipt of donation and must be attached to your income tax return.
